Denis Lill joined the RNZAF as a #13 course Boy Entrant School cadet in 1959.
It was in the RNZAF that he first expressed an interest in amateur dramatics and a fondness for mimicking characters of the BBC's The Goon Show.
Throughout his air force career, he involved himself in operatic and theatric productions.[2]
He left New Zealand for Britain in 1967.[3]

After a one-off appearance in the first series of Terry Nation's post-apocalyptic drama Survivors as Charles Vaughan, he became the leading actor for the show's second and third series.
In the 1990s he starred in sitcoms Outside Edge as Dennis and Only Fools and Horses as Cassandra's father, Alan Parry.[3]
He also appeared as the drunken MP Sir Talbot Buxomly who died onscreen in an episode of Blackadder the Third
and as the Beadle in Blackadder's Christmas Carol.

From 2003 until 2011 Lill starred in the ITV1 drama The Royal. as Consultant General Surgeon Mr. Rose.

Lill has also worked in radio theatre with one of his memorable characters being the brother in Ron Blair's play The Christian Brothers.
In 2014, he appeared in 24: Live Another Day.
In February 2016, Denis appeared in series 18 episode 4 " A Dying Art" of the itv crime drama Midsomer Murders.
Lill resides in Ryme Intrinseca, Dorset. He is married to Vanessa and has two children

He played King George VI (1895-1952) in The Gathering Storm (1974) and his paternal grandfather King Edward VII (1841-1910) in Lillie (1978). Furthermore, he played the latter's brother-in-law and the former's great-uncle Kaiser Frederick III of Germany (1831-1888) in Fall of Eagles (1974).
In May 2008, he was on tour with "And then They Were None" as Dr. Armstrong.
He was considered for the roles of Dr. Armstrong, Sir Percy Heseltine and Dr. Bukovsky in Lifeforce (1985).

Denis Lill on tour in Agatha Christie's 'Witness'
DENIS LILL IS on tour with the latest Agatha Christie Theatre Company's production of Witness for the Prosecution.
The tour began in Shrewsbury in January 2010, before travelling to Barnstable, Cardiff, and now moves on on to Blackpool (The Grand, March 8-13), Rhyl (Pavilion, 5-10 April), Southend-on-Sea (The Palace, 24-29 May), and Cambridge (Arts Theatre, 31 May-5 June). The tour then continues at venues across the country until September 2010.
Lill co-stars in the role of leading barrister Sir Wilfred Robarts. Alongside Lill, the cast includes: Honeysuckle Weeks (from the BAFTA award-winning Foyle's War), Ben Nealon (Soldier, Soldier), and Robert Duncan (Drop the Dead Donkey), with Peter Byrne (Dixon of Dock Green), Jennifer Wilson (The Brothers) and 1960's teen idol Mark Wynter.
